Picked Up Pieces

Shaughnessy returns to a format that he has not invoked in months - it is a picked up pieces special. All in all, I wouldn't call it overly interesting....but at least it was not as objectionable as past picked up pieces columsn save yet another shot at Curt Schilling....

Shaughnessy says
Shawn Chacon must have been channeling his inner Curt Schilling when he grabbed Astros general manager Ed Wade and threw him to the floor last week. When Schilling and Wade worked in Philadelphia, it was Wade who said, "Curt's a horse every fifth day. The other four days, he's a horse's ass."

Come on what the hell does this mean? Has Schilling ever physically attacked his general manager? How does Shaughnessy make the leap from Wade calling Schilling a horse's ass to Chacon "channeling his inner Schilling" when he physically accosted his employer? Shaughnessy saw a venue for getting yet another shot in at Schilling and it is unjustified. If there is a horse's ass in the room, it is Shaughnessy.

Dave - that comment is worse than unjustified; I'll call it for what it really is - slander and libel.

Shank was just channeling his inner Eichmann.

Who was the victim of "slander and libel?"

What was that about Reading Comprehension 101? You fail, miserably...

Years ago when my daughter was real young, she'd do this silly thing where she'd hold her breath when we drove by a cemetery. On one or two occasions I've been tempted to do that while driving through Groton, although I'll easily outlast Shaughnessy on this planet and that's all that really matters.

I wonder if Manny Ramirez will feel Shanks righteous indignation for assaulting the Sox traveling secretary? As I recall, Jim Rice doing a similar thing to a reporter led to years of Shank columns with nasty comments about Rice.

I thought Rice shoved the manager.

Bingo! Shank sharpens the knife today. Yes, I am a Manny apologist and, yes, I found his behavior to be unacceptable. Here's the deal, folks, it's an internal matter and everyone is moving on. Except, once again, for the media.

The Yahoos calling 'EEI yesterday were comparing this issue with the Chacon issue. I think they are two separate issues, IMO. They were also using the Manny/Youk incident last month to show a pattern of behavior. They were both to blame.

BTW-Rice did indeed shove Joe Morgan. He may have shoved a reporter along the way, but the famous incident was with Walpole Joe.

Rice had at least two shoving incident, shoving Joe Morgan in 88 when Joe pinch hit for Rice with Spike Owen, he was suspended 3 days.

But the incident that caused Shank to sharpen his claws on Rice at every opportunity was when Rice had an altercation with Hartford Courant sports writer Steve Fainaru, ripping the guys shirt off.

Some people also tell me Rice had a dust up with the teams former traveling sec during spring training one year over a parking space, but I don't recall that.

With Schilling out for the year, I suspect that Manny will be on the receiving end of all future gratuitous insults from Shank.
