Our Roller Coaster Ride is Almost Complete

Dan offers up the game recap and for the most part, he plays it straight. But then he gets into his asinine "Let's call this series over " schtick. If he were an ER doctor, you would probably hear him say, "The Rays, Time of Death, 12:16" But then you would hear the other docs yelling at him "But the patient hasn't died yet, you idiot." And Shaughnessy would respond, "Well, I just felt the need to say something."

Today he does this by concluding with, "And the Red Sox are planning on starting the World Series Wednesday night at Fenway against the Philadelphia Phillies." I, for one, don't believe in curses or jinxes and I would never claim that Shaughnessy has just jinxed the Red Sox because that would amount to conceding that Shaughnessy has power he clearly does not. I just find it incredibly annoying...but then again, we are talking Shaughnessy.

Dan Shaughnessy is a very sorry individual. He is derided by thousands, he's the butt of endless jokes, he's the subject of a web site. In short, he's a human vodoo doll. The sad thing about sports media hacks like Dan is that they have absolutely no alternative career path. Once a sports media hack, always a sports media hack. And the worst position to be in is a hated sports media hack who no one else wants. There's a reason why Jay Marriotti and Dan Shaughnessy look related, save for their hair color. There's a reason why Jay Marriotti still is unemployed. The hope here is that the economics within the newspaper industry plummet enough to cause the axe to fall on Shaughnessy. It's sad watching otherwise good people getting laid off the the Globe, while Shank happily and proudly racks up yet another all-expenses-paid caviar junket to some city. The sad reality is that these expensive junkets yield nothing that Shank couldn't get from Boston. He's not welcomed into locker rooms, and when he does show his mug he's instantly ignored. It's a lonely life being a Marriotti or a Shaughnessy. I feel bad for their respective families.

The prediction here is that if the Sox win tonight, Shank will trot out references to Rocky Balboa, cheesesteaks, arenas named 'Wachovia,' the liberty bell, Dr. J, and Bobbie Clarke. Just a hunch.

Cause - lame writing by bitter sportswriters.

Effect?

Discuss.

roger bournival,

You give the Shank too much credit with the reference to the NY Times trendline.

At least The NY Times has a chance to rebound by transforming itself into something new.

The Shank "is what he is", and some things never change.

I don't think the New York Times, the Boston Globe, or any of the major dailies can possible 're-make' themselves into money-making entities. They cannot derive substantive positive income from the on-line model, they won't ever derive positive income from the printed version, and advertising--whenever and however it comes back--won't be seeking these fossils of media in any event. In a way, what has happened in the world of media is that the 'wealth is being spread around.' Just like Obama wants. Isn't it just peachy when irony paints a picture like that?

All:

First sentence, he referenced "the Nation."
Stopped reading. Turned on ESPN.

So who's Shank going to blame for this elimination?

Theo?
Schilling?
Francona?

How bout just giving credit where credit is due. New concept I know, but its the truth. Garza was an absolute beast tonight. Lester was also very good, except for the home run. He gave up the first two runs on pitches that were very good but just happened to land in spots where they couldn't be caught (longoria's double, baldelli's grounder). Maddon pushed all the right buttons in the pen.

I guess if the blame game will be played, you could blame Tek and Kotsay (nine hundred left on base at least). But if not for injuries, Kotsay wouldn't even be in there and Varitek would have been further down the order.

Unless your really cold, not much to blame here. The Rays just plain old beat the Sox. Simple as that.

Can't wait to read Dan's article on how the Red Sox will beat the Phillies in 6 games...

The New York Times Co. made $21M profit in its second quarter. Revenue was a shade under three-quarters of a billion dollars.

The Globe ain't going anywhere.

Same paper, less product:

The Boston Globe is consolidating its daily paper into four sections as part of a redesign that will launch Friday, Oct. 24. The paper will no longer publish a free-standing business section — it will be folded into the a newly named “Metro” section — except on Sundays.

The Globe, which has seen its revenue and circulation plummet in recent years, says it will save about 24 pages per week in printing costs.

Or should I say, same price, less product?

The New York Times Co. made $21M profit in its second quarter. Revenue was a shade under three-quarters of a billion dollars.

The Globe ain't going anywhere.

Profit margin - 2.8% I wouldn't be so sure...

The Globe ain't going anywhere because propaganda machines are always propped up. As a self-sustaining operation, the Globe would be dead meat. That it survives is no major accomplishment. But I do find a TREMENDOUS amount of humor and irony in the fact that advertising dollars (and eyeballs) are being 'spread around' in Obama-like fashion. Clearly, the Globe and the NYT are happily living in that kind of socialistic world-order, no?
