Thanks for the. . .

kick in the nuts, Dan.

Dan regales us with what life would be like if the Patriots had won Super Bowl XLII. A lot of indigestion and angry commuters this morning thanks the Miserable One.

However you feel about the topic, though, Dan did manage some good lines:

"Mercury Morris would be harder to find than Whitey Bulger."

"Seventeen Greater Boston television and radio stations would have paid for the rights to be the "official station of the World Champion Patriots.''"

"The Bruins would be very, very lonely."

Shaughnessy is Boston's version of Chicago's Mariotti, who has been dispatched to the Land of Misfit Sports Journalists. Having no friends or real allies at any sports franchise, how do either of these men succeed at their profession? I have seen numerous photos of Dan milling about--usually in the back of a throng of other sports media types. The go-getters are the ones in front. Then there is Dan, who slinks near the back because he realizes he's 'not welcome around these parts.' But the Globe pays him a salary, so attend he must, even if it means capturing nothing real or substantive. But then, that's the beauty of being a columnist: You don't need to come up with anything real or substantive.

The anger that surrounds people like Shaughnessy and Mariotti is clearly a by-product of the doom and gloom that surrounds the industry they work (worked?) in. This is fascinating to watch, and not altogether unpleasant when it lays waste to angry, rage-filled members of the Cabal.

What was the point of this column? Another opportunity for Shaughnessy to display his clever little one-liners?

Shaughnessy surely should have recognized that we don't like to hear about unpleasantness. He obviously just wants to rub noses in it. He should write nice positive columns filled with the statistic of the week. Analyze matchups. Quote geniuses. Ask questions at public press conferences so everyone knows what's on his mind before he writes it.

Scrub history clean! Adulation now, adulation tomorrow, adulation forever!

another "List column" from lazy, washed up Shank....the reason he writes so many columns like this is because it is SO EASY, he doesn't have to try and put a paragraph together....God, what a sorry excuse for a sportswriter

Let's face it, everything Shaughnessy said was true (within the usual hyperbole of sports columnists). We are all (me included) still smarting from what happened in February. I literally have trouble believing it was real, and I consider myself a reasonably lucid guy. I just think that whether we like it or not, 2008 was one weird year for Pats fans. A good column.

.....jeeze...I've been a Patriots fan for over 40 years, a season ticket holder for 25...sure, last years Super Bowl was a bitter pill to swallow BUT IT'S TIME TO MOVE ON.....if anybody else wrote that column I would just shrug my shoulders....but this is typical Shaughnessy, he loves to tweak the fans every chance he gets....what's next?...a column on how things would have been if only the ball didn't go between Buckner's legs?.....please....

Give Shank credit for this - he just authored excellent bulletin board material for the Patriots locker room.

REVENGE TOUR 2008, BEGINNING SEPTEMBER 7 AT GILLETTE STADIUM.
