Batten Down the Hatches: Schilling Has Left the Building
Over the years Dan Shaughnessy has -- for whatever reasons -- adopted numerous targets for his venomous tirades, much like Dave "The Colonel" Egan did in the "bad old days." (see: Williams, Theodore S.)
Well, with his announcement on 38pitches.com this morning, Curt Schilling made it official: He's retiring from baseball. Interestingly enough, Bruce Allen, founder of Boston Sports Media Watch, wonders if the Shank attacks on the Schill might continue, anyway.
Now, with both Schilling and Manny Ramirez no longer on the premises, Shank is going to have to determine who will serve as his new whipping boy. Lions and tigers and bears! Oh, my!
Maybe we ought to start a lottery to vote on who it should be. Yours truly excluded.

Does anyone really have to wonder whether he'll continue to spit Schilling's name out of his PC?
Heck, he's probably already written the columns. It's like Mad Libs with him anyway.
Pretty simple. The next athlete to act like a Class A jerk will fill Ramirez and the Great Schill's shoes. Maybe I'll agree with the next nominee, maybe I won't I didn't agree with him on Garciaparra or Martinez, but his columns on the subject were grand fun.
The Great Schill will, of course, get a free pass for hiding behind a blog when he announced his retirement, rather than a public press conference. The pink hats and bloggers will buy into the stale old "by-pass the media" excuse. And no, interviews with his partners-in-commerce at Entercom don't count.
As for Jerry G, I can't tell whether "Yours truly excluded" means he's not going to vote on the "new whipping boy," or whether he is excluding himself from being the "new whipping boy." The latter construction would assume a level of pretentiousness that I don't think the he has reached. Maybe a copy desk could have cleaned that up.
