DHL Dan CLXXIV - Something To Cheer About

I remember Ted Williams for, among other things, being more than cantankerous, especially towards members of the press. Thus my surprise at reading this headline:
Ted Williams would be rooting for Luis Arraez to hit .400, and other thoughts

Picked-up pieces while waiting for a Fenway official scorer to give somebody an error …

▪ Ted Williams would be rooting for Miami Marlins star Luis Arraez to hit .400. Ted supported Rod Carew when Carew batted .388 in 1977, boosted George Brett when Brett finished at .390 in 1980, and cheered for Tony Gwynn when San Diego’s hit machine closed at .394 in the strike-shortened season of 1994.

Williams had zero old-guy bitterness toward players of any new generation. He once told me, “That [Paul] Molitor kid in Milwaukee reminds me of Joe DiMaggio. He’ll be in the Hall of Fame someday.”

Teddy Ballgame remains the last big leaguer to hit .400 (.406 in 1941), and he’d be encouraging Arraez in 2023.

Arraez was in Boston this past week and I couldn’t resist the opportunity to speak with a kid with a chance to be baseball’s first .400 hitter in 82 years. The Marlins have played more than half their season and Arraez left Fenway batting .392.
And if you think Shank's still ripping off / 'sampling' from Felger & Mazz, you'd be right:
▪ A reader points out that the Boston Red Sox have become the Minnesota Twins. Middle-market team. Middle-market payroll. Little star power. Forever .500 or worse. Chaim Bloom’s anonymous roster didn’t register a blip in All-Star fan voting.

Off By A Year

I was making the call around this time last year, but today Shank finally throws in the towel: He's poorly bullshitting us with that last half-sentence. We at DSW have documented numerous times where, for instance, Scott Zolak would tweet something sarcastic ar Shank (or respond to one of his in a similar manner) and who could forget the near world record Shank set in the 20 yard / two room office steeple chase and escape? I'm not buying that line of his claiming he 'enjoyed it', and neither should you. I can't wait for the scuttlebut / rumors that will inevitably come out from this.

Late To The Party

I was at CPE courses this week and didn't have the time or motivation to post any of Shank's recent 'work', so here are links to his recent columns. The first one was on the recent passing of Peter Frates, the former Boston College baseball player who had succumbed from ALS and who raised millions of dollars from the Ice Bucket Challenge. Shank then shows his positive side with heapings of praise for the offseason moves by the Boston Red Sox (with trademark hyperbole thrown in for good measure):
Why this could be the worst Red Sox offseason ever

Pardon me while I heave into my official, team-sponsored 2020 Red Sox barf bag.

I have been following the Sox since 1962 and never found a Red Sox offseason more odious. Granted, it’s still early, but this has potential to be the worst Sox winter of all time. Four days of Big Nothing at the Winter Meetings only fortifies the financial teardown and impending Bridge Year that awaits.

This offseason narrative stinks. In the old days, we talked about ballplayers as trading cards. It was exciting if the Sox dealt Don Schwall for Dick Stuart, or Al Nipper and Calvin Schiraldi for Lee Smith. We got fired up about the Local Nine acquiring Pedro Martinez, Manny Ramirez, Curt Schilling, and Chris Sale in offseason blockbuster signings/deals.
It wasn't that long ago when Shank loved the new Red Sox manager, was it?

By the way, Shank's still doing his weekly radio appearances on Zolak & Bertrand (which is simulcast on NBC Sports Boston); he's just given up on tweeting about them beforehand. I was watching the last part of it yesterday when he does his 'Dates of Distinction' / 'On this day in history...' schtick, which to me is pretty boring radio. It got interesting / strange as soon as Shank stopped talking and finished his appearance. I had looked down to grab a bite of lunch and then looked up about five seconds later. What I saw was amazing - it was a shot of Shank's back and he was walking away rapidly. A second or two later both Scott Zolak and Beetle were saying to each other - where the hell is Shaughnessy? He just up and bolted from the place as soon as he was done, was in the next room and had his jacket on, all within a span of about five seconds. It was and will always be the best TV studio pick & roll of all time. I think it also says something telling - Shank really dislikes doing these appearances now.

Rehash Radio Ad Infinitum

Just confirming the obvious:
Remember this column from Monday? That's what you and I heard during the first segment of Shank's appearance this morning. And if you didn't hear it, you're better off for it.

'Word For Word', You Say?

My co-blogger Mike ably pointed out the massive hypocrisy of his Bill Buckner eulogy column, saying it is 'unfair' to define him by one play but having said the exact opposite over numerous columns and platforms since 1986. It has practically been a mini-cottage industry of his, a poor man's 'Curse of the Bambino' without the matching book sales.

Mike spotted the Bob Ley interview where he repeated a fair amount of this column (i.e, 'word for word') in that interview. So imagine my 'surprise' when I tuned into 98.5 The Sports Hub this morning:
My trip to the grocery store this morning was marred by the exposure to the following segment - between 11:45 and 11:50 it was largely a regurgitation of the Bill Buckner column, and we at Dan Shaughnessy Watch have documented this hackery on numerous occasions.

Disingenuous, hypocritical and lazy - what a combination!

Fool's Gold

I caught the 'Dan's Dates' part of the show around that time - it was painful, like 'a tooth filling without novacaine' level painful.

Playing To His Strengths

Shank hasn't banged out a column in over a week, so his weekly radio appearance on 98.5 The Sports Hub left him without his usual script of regurgitating his column for the first couple of segments of the show.

But all is not lost! Who needs a script when you can just instead shit on one of the local sports teams who are in a recent tailspin?

He Got One Right!

I forgot to mention this one yesterday. I was pulling into the North Quincy T lot when Shank went on 98.5 The Sports Hub to fill in for Scott Zolak & Marc Bertrand. I wasn't going to wait to hear how it turned out; I'll just let Shank take it from here:

How To Get Laughed Off The Air

It's been nearly three whole weeks since Shank's written a column for the Boston Globe. He has nothing to regurgitate in his (normally) weekly appearance on Zolak & Beetle's show on 98.5 The Sports Hub, and he's gonna lead off with this nonsense?
I'm pretty sure this will get slapped down for the crap that it is.

Programming Note

Shank hasn't written a column in nearly two weeks. I believe that's the main reason he wasn't on 98.5 The Sports Hub earlier this week - because he didn't have a column to regurgitate.

Let us count our blessings...

Recycling - Not Just For Shank!

I had one of those shredding companies come by the house this morning and rip through ten boxes of old tax returns, some of them going back to the year 2000 or so.

While I'm not 100% certain if that meets the definition of recycling, I do know that this is:
"Plenty of Pats" means he'll more or less read from his most recent column for the first segment at 11:00.

These Arbitron Ratings = Blutarsky's GPA

The best two hours of local sports talk radio... said no one, ever:
I do feel a little sorry for Scott Zolak, though.

Repeat Radio

Shank was on 98.5 this morning:
I listened in at 11:10; it was a rehash of his David Price columns from the past couple of days, someone mentioned Tomato Cans, and... off went the car radio.

Tuning Out

Shank's weekly borefest drones on:
I caught the first half-hour whilst enjoying the Southeast Expressway & Mass. Turnpike traffic. The first thirteen minutes was Bill Belichick's press conference and the rest of that half-hour segment was Zo and Beetle completely destroying Shank's column from yesterday, given the tone and direction of Belichick's presser. If I can find audio later on today, I'll post it.

UPDATE AT 5:47 PM - Audio is here. Shank - 'I'll have to reconfigure all my thoughts because of all the news that's just came out of there' and 'There's no punishment for not showing up for voluntary...' Hence the word VOLUNTARY!!! What a schmuck. Zo & Beetle pile on Shank from there (12:00 minute mark).

It Must Be Memorial Day

...when the regular talent at 98.5 FM - The Sports Hub needs to resort to an alternative lineup:
Four entire hours of Shank?

Thursday, May 10, 2018

Be Still, My Beating Heart

Shank's gonna be on with Zolak & Bertrand (98.5, The Sports Hub) in about ten minutes. $10 says he leads off by regurgitation of his last two columns.

Whare's Waldo Shaughnessy?

I'm wondering why Shank skipped his weekly 98.5 The Sports Hub appearance, which he would have done by now. Is it because we're going to get the rare Thursday appearance? Have Zolak and Bertrand finally got sick of his act? Does management finally realize that his weekly regurgitation of his columns provide no value whatsoever in the realm of radio, or that Shank has a face for radio?

We gots to know!

Zero Imagination

How are you gonna bore the living shit out of your audience today, Shank?

UPDATE AT 11:08 AM - I feel like calling in and asking Shank how climate change is going to affect the Pats / Jets game on Sunday.

UPDATE AT 11:24 AM - Shank and his co-host are getting mauled by a bunch of callers because they did not fully understand the injury situation / roster implications with regard to Aaron Rodgers.

UPDATE AT 12:02 PM - I cannot believe Shank had the balls to say what I just heard - "Well crafted writing is not valued anymore." Oh, please! When was the last time we read something from Shank that was 'well crafted', that wasn't also marred by his trademark trolling and relentless negativity? I've now reached my bullshit quota for the day.

Can't Wait For The Arbitron Ratings

Are they trying to lose the audience on purpose? Why would you do this to them for four hours? Doesn't the Constitution prohibit 'cruel and unusual punishment'?
