Sucking Lemon

"One thing we know they agree on is Schilling: thanks for the clutch work, big fella, now don't let the door hit you on the way out."

Speak for yourself CHB.

With the announcement that Schilling would be back another year, Dan has to suck on a lemon.

But Dan is happy to have his ignorance of the front office's inner workings exposed to be able to write about Schilling for another year.

"Love him or hate him, things are a lot more interesting and fun with the Big Blowhard around. Without Schill, we'd miss the blog, the nonstop promotion of his new company, the hard-hitting interviews/infomercials on WEEI, the butting into everyone else's business, the retraction of statements made about other people, and the eight or nine wins he's brought to the table in two of the last three seasons."

Because that is all that it is about. Picking on somebody you do not like for personal reasons. The sport is only secondary.

Also, notice the use of misleading statistics at the end. Dan overlooks the 200+ IP in 2006, doesn't mention that Dan was coming off of a severe injury in 2005, and ignores the fact that Schilling doesn't get paid in 2008 unless he hits the IP incentives. Facts are not Dan's strong point; invective is.

There are also some "cover his ass" bits, where Dan assumes certain things about the front office in order to make the signing more congruous with Dan's earlier statements. The Red Sox were "stunned by this development" and "played hardball and won." None of the accounts of the negotiations suggest either of these claims are true, but if they make Shank feel better.

The nappy-headed CHB was SOOOOO SURE that Schill was out the door that he'd been almost giddy. He was on that stupid NESN 10.0 show talking about how pathetic and hated Schill was. He also was downplaying Schill's HOF credentials saying that he'd yet to make a strong case to him.

Now he has deal with another year of Schill. I can't wait for Schill to take the gloves off and shank the Nappy Headed CHB.

God I hate him....if I had to save two people drowning and it was a choice between the nappy headed CHB and A-Rod, I'd save A-Rod.

On a number of levels this may be Shaughnessy's worst column ever. Such mean spiritedness!

To be fair (on this one point) a LOT of people thought Schill wasn't coming back.

But that paragraph of CHB's shows why he's such a petty jerk and why, unlike Bob Ryan, he should be hammered for getting this wrong.

As to his HOF credentials, they're better than CHB wants to admit. Everyone harps on the 216 wins...well, that didn't stop Koufax or Lefty Gomez, both of whom have less than 216 wins and are in the Hall.

Shaughnessy is so lame. It's amazing the lengths he will go to to try and validate the krep he spews.

You do a real public service with this Website. Thanks!

Hey Dan, how'd Shill do in the '04 and '07 playoffs? His off-the-field "antics" are easily overlooked and mostly unknown except of course to you.
Shill could murder puppies in the dugout and the fans wouldn't care because of those 2 rings he helped bring to boston.

I was laughing by butt off today reading today "column". The Schilling resigning must have stuck in his craw something fierce. Take this line for example:

"Without Schill, we'd miss the blog, the nonstop promotion of his new company, the hard-hitting interviews/infomercials on WEEI, the butting into everyone else's business, the retraction of statements made about other people, and the eight or nine wins he's brought to the table in two of the last three seasons."

Wow! Such hate. Such rancor. And for what? Because Curt tells new players not to talk to you (good advise)? Because he holds political viewpoints different than your own? Because he playing a sport at a high level that you've only dreamed about playing at?

How is Curt butting into everyone's business (fact: Barry Bonds took performance enhancing drugs, fact: Bonds was investigated by the IRS for tax fraud, fact: Bonds did cheat on his wife)? The money earned from his radio appearances goes to charity. Where is the nonstop promotion for his video game company? I haven't seen any ads for it. Shank has lost touch with reality.

We get it Shank. You won't be voting for Schilling when he's up for HoF consideration. What a tool!

Shaughnessy won't be voting for The Great Schill when he comes up for the Hall of Fame?

Neither should anyone else until they add Bert Blyleven and Jim Kaat; and then if they elect The Great Schill, and his ten sub-10 win seasons, they'll have to add Mickey Lolich, Jerry Koosman, Luis Tiant, Frank Tanana and Tommy John. Post season? The Great Schill's numbers are very good, although "playoff records" tend to be inflated by the expansion of the LCS to seven games and inclusion of Division series -- many of the pitchers who won more than The Great Schill never had the experiencing of pitching after the potential length of the postseason was nearly doubled.

RE: "playoff records" tend to be inflated by the expansion of the LCS

You can't blame a player for playing the games the League says they need to play to win a championship. Should Schilling have opted not to start an ALDS game because he wants to play the same number of post season games as say Bob Gibson?

C'mon Bruce! I thought you were supposed to be objective (dealing with facts not emotions). The fact is that there are more post season games to be played in this era. You can't penalize a guy for succeeding.

And, you can't seriously believe that Shank is going to vote for Schilling for the HoF.

I do agree with most of your list of players who should be in the HoF. However, there are players with worse numbers than Schilling's in the HoF, too.

The thing about the Hall, Bruce, is despite The CHB's inability to distinguish between competency (Jim Rice) and prolonged excellence (Schilling), there are plenty of voters who can. Schilling is as good as in, no matter how loud and hard The CHB screams against him.

I'm still stunned at how nasty Danny Boy treats Schilling. The "bloody sock" games counted for nothing?

He's petty, small-minded, always correct in his assertions and sanctamonious.

We ought to tab him with his own new nickname...the Shrill Shill.

Do us ALL a favor, Dan, and get ahold of Barry Bonds' former trainer and start doing excessiev steroids so YOUR head will blow up like a watermelon. Then your sanity will NEVER be questioned again.

The 'mean-spiritedness' comes partly from CHB's demeanor; it's who he is. A columnist is 'above the fray,' don't you know...an elitist to be honored in magnificent fashion. The Boston Globe breeds people like this, being full of haughty and esteemed individuals. But the other part of CHBs 'lemon-faced' demeanor comes from his industry being in shambles. His newspaper continually (and happily, I will add) losing readers, circulation, and revenue. It's obviously difficult to put on a brave face each day; going to Morrissey Boulevard is essentially like boarding the Hindenburg before its last flight. Happily, CHB has neither the demeanor nor the looks to carve out his own TV-show life preserver like colleague Ryan has. So CHB is left to toil for The Globe until The Globe is no more.

So you saying that Bob Ryan is better looking than Shank? That's not saying much...

;)

If you look at the regular season statistics, Schilling is a marginal candidate for the HOF, but in my opinion what puts him over the top is his playoff record, hell 2004 alone should qualify him.

OB,

Even you cannot even defend the column or attack the original post. You have to go after a comment about a highly subjective issue like the Hall of Fame. Wow. CHB has lost his last supporter.

Still no admission that you were wrong about the sideline taping article?

DB,

Bruce is just hoping that by ignoring you, you will go away. This blog has let him off a couple of times when he has been wrong in the past, so I say good for you for keeping on him about it.
