Wondering about Jackie Bradley Jr.’s place in Red Sox lore, and other thoughtsTalk about damning with faint praise! The rest of the column's worth checking out.
Picked-up pieces while applying for membership to the Milwaukee chapter of the JBJ Love Society …
▪ What is Jackie Bradley Jr.’s place in Red Sox history? Who was he? Where does he fit?
An epic underachiever at the plate (.239 career batting average), Bradley dazzled in center field for eight seasons at Fenway Park. He probably was Boston’s best center fielder since Jimmy Piersall, and there aren’t many folks around who remember Piersall. If Bradley played in Baltimore, a good comparison would be Paul Blair.
JBJ was overrated locally because of his amazing catches, but he also delivered big hits when he was MVP of the 2018 ALCS against Houston. He was a one-time All-Star and Gold Glover, and has two World Series rings, but was never as good as Johnny Damon or Trot Nixon. Troy O’Leary was a better hitter, but JBJ no doubt is a more important figure in Sox history.

DHL Dan CXXVII - Wondering
Jackie Bradley Jr. was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers earlier this week. Shank, never a fan of JBJ, leads off his latest Picked up Pieces column in that precise fashion:

Grand Slam
Dear Jackie Bradley Jr.:
Remember when I was ragging on you earlier this year? We're good now, right?
Your pal,
Shank

HOUSTON — This was a statement game and Jackie Bradley Jr. made the loudest noise. From there, a note of caution about the Astros (it will 'not be easy' to beat them two more times, etc.) and this little gem:
On a day of a Spygate accusation hurled at the world champion Astros, scintillating plays (hello, Alex Bregman), questionable calls (did that Steve Pearce fly ball clang off the wall before it was caught?) and high-wire drama, JBJ put a stop to the suspense with a no-doubt grand slam off Roberto Osuna in the top of the eighth inning Tuesday. Bradley’s mighty clout blew open a tight contest and propelled the surging Red Sox to an 8-2, Game 3 victory over the ’Stros.
That’s 113 wins and counting for your Olde Towne Team. If the Sox can beat the Astros two more times in this ALCS, they’ll open the 114th World Series next Tuesday night at Fenway.
“We saw that coming in the middle of the season,’’ Cora said when asked about Bradley. “Now he’s more comfortable. Credit to him.’’They saw it, and Shank didn't.

So, Off The Jackie Bradley Jr. Bandwagon?
Is it just me or does Shank love to complain about nearly everything?
Reader response was somewhat predictable:Jackie Bradley is now at .178.

Mendoza Line looking like .400.
But he has to play because, you know, if he didn't make that great throw in the 8th Tuesday the Sox would have lost, 7-2 instead of 6-2.
You’ve been underperforming for years and the Globe still trots you out. #potcallingkettle

Love Bradley Jr...best outfielder I've ever seen (and I saw Paul Blair AND Griffey Jr.)...but he's got to hit at least .240 or so...

So far, it just seems to be Shank!Does anyone else root for him to get out every time?

The Obligatory Jackie Bradley Jr. Column
Is Shank in Fort Myers to report on the 2018 Boston Red Sox or is he there to 'report' on everything else except the 2018 Boston Red Sox ?
FORT MYERS, Fla. — Despite coming off back-to-back division titles, these 2018 Red Sox seem to inspire inordinate doubt and skepticism. Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts, Dustin Pedroia, and David Price have alternately talked about leadership, handling things better, and the joylessness of the 2017 season. On Saturday, Price was spotted wearing a white hoodie with “We Need Leaders” printed on the back.Eventually he'll do columns on the 2018 team. When that happens is anybody's guess.
And then there’s Jackie Bradley Jr., the spectacular center fielder who is the second-longest-tenured Red Sox player behind Pedroia.
Anyone remember Bradley’s spring training in 2013? He was the only positive thing the Sox had going into that season. They were still reeling from the 2012 Bobby Valentine train wreck, which had come on the heels of the 2011 chicken-and-beer collapse, after which a lot of people either left or got fired. In the spring of ’13, the Sox had no hope, other than a Double A outfielder who batted .419 in Florida and made himself the Sox’ youngest Opening Day starter since Dwight Evans.
...
There is a slight weariness to him. He’s learned that in Boston the highs are higher and the lows are lower. He’s experienced plenty of both.
Bradley was on the Lou Merloni Pawtucket Shuttle in 2013, 2014, and 2015. He had his breakout year in 2016, when he started the All-Star Game and finished with 26 homers, a .267 average, and 87 RBIs. But last year he slumped to .245 with 17 homers and 63 RBIs in 133 games — a season he characterizes as “subpar”.

Center Field
Shank gets shipped back to Fort Myers for a few more days, and covers the situation with the Red Sox center field position.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — So how does this all feel if you are Jackie Bradley Jr.? What’s it like when you are old news, under the radar, and suddenly almost invisible at the age of 23?It's safe to conclude that Jackie Jr. needs time in the minors to develop as a batter; Shank's just here to point out the obvious.
“I’m good,’’ Bradley said Wednesday morning, standing in front of his locker at JetBlue Park hours before he was scheduled to start in right field against the Baltimore Orioles.
“It’s all right. I’ve got no complaints. I’m the same guy — even going through adversity like I am right now.’’
Everybody knows the situation. Jacoby Ellsbury went to New York for a big bag of money. JBJ was anointed the new Sox center fielder. The Sox went on record and said they were comfortable turning over the position to Bradley. It was going to be Xander Bogaerts at shortstop and Bradley in center. The dawn of the rookies.

Junior
No, I don't mean this Junior, but instead Jackie Bradley Jr., currently a second year center fielder for the Red Sox who hopes to finally stick with the big league club.
FORT MYERS, Fla. — The first look was . . .I'm surprised to read that last part; it's really shocking for Shank to bring up negative things about the Red Sox's previous seasons...
Underwhelming.
Jackie Bradley Jr. knows. He knows there are doubts about his ability to be a solid everyday hitter in the big leagues. He made it to The Show last year on the strength of a spectacular spring training (.419 in 28 games).
While the Red Sox were trying to dig out from the disgrace of last place and Bobby Valentine, JBJ became the smooth, sweet face of the franchise. He was the unwashed phenomenon — the antidote to chicken-and-beer and the train wreck of 2012.
