The Patriots and the Expectations Game

Shaughnessy has another column on the Patriots today - this time, he speculates how Belichick and the Pats will handle the lofty expectations from the media and the fans.

In the past, Shaughnessy contends that the Pats have played the "We don't get any respect" card. They won't be able to do that this year since the prevailing thought is that they are so loaded. Shaughnessy offers quotes from a phone interview he had with Bill Parcells. Parcells essentially says it's a new year and you have to start over. He also interviews Belichick who says the Pats are approaching the year one day at a time. Yawn.

Three notes of interest...

- Shaughnessy gets Parcells to warm up about the Pats on a personal level:

Obviously, when you have a relative on the team, you want good things to happen," said the Tuna. "And when there's a guy who worked for you for a long time, you hope things go well...

Detente?

- Shaughnessy misses a great chance to compare/contrast Parcells/Owens to Belichick/Moss.

- Shaughnessy has a two game hitting streak with current cultural reference, calling ESPN's "Who's now" one of the worst ideas in the history of the network

Shank sez....
"New England's never-satisfied owners will continue to complain about their place behind the Red Sox (someone at Gillette actually counts column space devoted to the Patriots in relation to the Sox), but it's going to be impossible for coach Bill Belichick to rally his men with hard evidence that they've been dissed by hometown media, out-of-town pundits, or rival teams."

Wow! I've heard someone at the Globe actually tries to trace the ID's of bloggers who write less than flattering comments about a certain columnist! I also heard that the same guy then tries to contact the blogger's boss and report them for misusing company computers if he suspects they were blogging at their workplace!

Shank sez....
"Connecting a stunning series of skull-imploding clichés, Belichick cited, ". . . one practice after another, putting one foot in front of the other. We're just day to day right now. There's no light at the end of the tunnel. We've got a long way to go, a lot of work to do, and I'm not really worried about anything down the road, a month from now, or two months from now, or any other team right now . . . It's not about expectations or comparisons or anything else.""

Daniel......think about how WE feel about connected cliches that cause imploded skulls..........

When Shank dismisses the "we don't get respect" card, he conveniently forgets that the Mainstream Media was semi-quietly rooting for the Patriots to blow it in the AFC Championship Game.

Shank interviews Tuna Parcells - if he can get Tuna to admit he was wrong about the Krafts, that will be astonishing.

BTW, did Shank interview Al From Everett, too?

And BTW, for everyone from Shank on down who gripes about belichick's press conferences - what is he supposed to say to satisfy you?
