Weary of writing about the first four losses of the Red Sox's 2012 season, Shank shifts gears and talks to former Sox manager Terry Francona, who will
not be attending next week's 100th anniversary celebration of Fenway Park.
Don’t look for former manager Terry Francona at Fenway Park when the Red Sox celebrate the 100th anniversary of their beloved ballpark a week from Friday against the Yankees. Francona is still smarting from the way things ended between himself and the Red Sox after the collapse of 2011.
“Somebody went out of their way to make me look pretty bad,’’ Francona said, referring to a story by the Globe’s Bob Hohler that cited unnamed club sources expressing concerns that Francona’s job performance may have been affected by his use of pain medication. “It’s a shame. I’m sure they’ll have a great event and I was part of a lot of that stuff there, but I just can’t go back there and start hugging people and stuff without feeling a little bit hypocritical.’’
Pretty unusual for Shank to get this kind of access / story, right? That is, until you read the very end of the article:
Dan Shaughnessy is a Globe columnist. He can be reached at dshaughnessy@globe.com. He is working on a book with Terry Francona on Francona’s career as Red Sox manager.
Interesting...
I don't blame Francona, what the organization did to him on the way out the door was classless ... then to have the balls to call him and accuse him of being unfair to them?? Wow.
ReplyDeleteIt's obvious ownership planted that phony story for Bob Holler to publish pertaining to Francona - the Henry-Lucchino pairing have proven they are thin-skinned bullies who think they know more than they do and lash out when someone crosses them.
ReplyDeleteHey, here's a line Shank can use --- "They are thin-skinned bullies who think they know more than they do and lash out when someone crosses them (kind of like Roger Goodell, huh?)."
You're welcome, Shank.
Monkeesfan - never, ever forget the Tom Werner angle.
ReplyDeleteIs it just me or did Shanks column change from when it was first published? I recall when I first read it, it had a paragraph about Luccino accusing Terry of being unfair to the organization and Terry replying with an expletive ... I didn't see that upon rereading later in the day.
ReplyDeleteRoger - yes. Thank you for the addition.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous - yes the online version did change - Tony Massarotti talked about this on his Baseball Show on WBZ-FM today.
