Seattle Sucks

After a string of happy columns about the prosperity of local Boston teams and players, Dan taps the Globe's travel accounts to go all the way to Seattle to tell us that the situation in Seattle stinks. From NFL football to NBA basketball (no more) to college football to MLB baseball, Seattle fans have it rough.

Whenever Dan writes about Seattle, he can't resist Sleepless in Seattle references (you could look it up). Dan also gives us references to Starbucks, grunge, and Fraser Crane. Dan is a pretty hip feller. Unfortunately, he can't even take credit for the best line in the column:

"It's so bad around here that people turn from sports to financial pages to cheer up," wrote Art Thiel, the estimable Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist.

At least he was smart enough to throw it in there...

  1. It's a little annoying to keep reading his references to the (Sea)Hawks, as there is another pro sports team that's actually, not sarcastically, called the Hawks. You'd think this is an area where that editor thingy would come in real handy...

  2. Shaghnessy says 'It's so bad around here' rather than 'It's so bad around there' because he wants everyone to know that he is, in fact, writing his piece from a cushy Seattle hotel room. He wants to impress everyone that he's worthy of being sent on these expensive trips while his company and industry are collapsing around him. Of course, there's nothing that Shaughnessy writes that actually require that he get on a plane and fly to another city. He doesn't rub elbows with team personnel and players because they wouldn't allow it. So he sits in his room and cowers in the background after the game to grab the same morsels of information that the beat writers get.

  3. Speaking of the financial pages:

The Tribune Company, the newspaper chain that owns The Chicago Tribune and The Los Angeles Times, is trying to negotiate new terms with its creditors and has hired advisers for a possible bankruptcy filing, according to people briefed on the matter.

Tribune is in danger of falling below the cash flow required under its agreement with its bondholders, but it is not clear how seriously Tribune is thinking about seeking bankruptcy protection. Analysts and bankruptcy experts say that the hiring of advisers, including Lazard and Sidley Austin, one of the company’s longtime law firms, could be a just-in-case move, or a bargaining tactic. The company would not comment on Sunday.

  4. The worst thing is Steve Buckley did a piece much like this in Sunday's Herald but was much better, even citing a 1910s-era hockey championship Seattle won over the Canadiens.
