Be Happy Game 7 Didn't Go Long

I missed this piece earlier in the week because Dan was able to crank out a game piece in time to make the online Globe edition.

It starts:
I was reading Hawthorne's "The House of the Seven Gables" when I had an urge for a 7UP. So I went to 7-Eleven and bought seven cans. It was 7 p.m.

No need to read any further.

Thanks to Barstool Sports for noticing this.

  2. As one who has been accused of opinions tainted by ethnic or racial bias by this blogger, I must say I'm appalled that he's crediting Barstool Sports and seemingly endorsing its point of view on something, considering it's proprietors seem to have an all-white view of society -- at least when it comes to women.

115 women on the cover in that site's back issues. I count three blacks, three Asians and none discernibly hispanic, although I didn't go checking for names. 22 Pages of photos from previous editions, one black woman. A photo collection about some recent party sponsored by the site, not a single black woman in the foreground.

Some of its commentary is amusing, but there's no question the site and its sister publication have a decidedly white view of what passes for an attractive woman.

  3. Maybe The CHB moonlights there, OB.

  4. How is crediting Barstool Sports with noticing something an endorsement of their point of view?

    Oh, right - it's not.

  5. OB,

You back in class at Harvard Law?

Your argument does not relate to the fact the CHB committed another journalistic crime.

Stop trying to "attack" the victim.

Tell us what you thought of the CHB's "seven deadly sins"?

  6. Nothing wrong with the column as a thumb-sucker. The complaints about it are too petty to bother even noting.

But I'm really struck at how this guy tosses out allegations of racial and ethnic bias and notes, with approval, the observations of a Web site which seems to like to present pictures of white women, both famous and obscure, which its proprietors deem attractive but can't seem to find any women of color worth pointing out or featuring.

Maybe he ought not to be so ready to fire off unfounded claims of racial or ethnic bias against those with whom he disagrees.

  7. OB,

Agreed to regarding "racial and ethnic bias" in this case since I've never heard of or been to "Barstool Sports".

Let us agree that Shank deserves a spanking whenever he commits the "seven deadly sins" again.

Can't counter the argument? Change the subject...

  9. Actually, Roger, I offered my views on the "argument," which is of the I like strawberry, no I like vanilla variety, and proceeded to criticize another matter.

Work on that reading comprehension, will you? No Sarah Palin am I.

  10. Agree with Roger, the racism charge is ridiculous.

  11. Not to change the topic here, but our pal OB stated this the other day:

"The New York Times Co. made $21M profit in its second quarter. Revenue was a shade under three-quarters of a billion dollars.

    The Globe ain't going anywhere."

Too bad the 3Q wasn't as rosy:

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20081023/media_nm/us_newyorktimes_results

"Net income, including discontinued operations, was $6.5 million, or 5 cents a share, compared with $13.4 million, or 9 cents a share, last year. Revenue fell 8.9 percent to $687 million."

    ReplyDelete
  12. ...and proceeded to criticize another matter.

Which the rest of us call 'changing the subject'.

    Can you dig it, brothers?

    Guess OB can't.

  13. Not to change the topic here,

Wouldn't be the first on this thread...

  14. OB,

Agree with us that "Shank deserves a spanking whenever he commits the "seven deadly sins" again" and we will let you apply the first smack.

If not, then you should eat every piece of the crap the Shank dishes in articles like "It's tough to eliminate a number of thoughts".

Where do you stand? Don't wander off the subject.

  15. Not to worry about the financial situation at the NYT and ugly step-child Boston Globe. Ad revenues, paid circulation, and profits will all soar post-election as consumers and advertisers decide to 'Let bygones be bygones' with respect to the unending Liberal bias during the campaign. In the immortal words of John Kerry, "Would that it were; would that it were."

  16. OB,

First, when have I made comments about Shank's alleged racial bias? I very well may have, but I don't recall and I tend not to throw out that accusation.

Also, please explain to me clearly and logically how noting that I first read Dan's column at Barstool Sports in any way indicates I endorse the racism that you dubiously claim they display. Make every step in your argument clear. Simply saying that I read something on a sight that you consider racist does not constitute proof that I endorse their alleged views.

Also, don't you have anything better to do than go through over one hundred covers of some mostly useless rag?

  17. OB,

    Ouch!

dbvader stung you like a bee.

  18. But wait, there's more!

“Our board of directors plans to (slash - ed) review our dividend policy before the end of this year to determine what is most prudent in light of the overall market conditions,” the company’s chief executive, Janet Robinson, said in a statement.

What's that tell you about the cash flow problem, OB? You feel qualified to discuss this issue with me? Can you still credibly claim 'The Globe ain't going anywhere'?

    Don't bother:

The company raised its quarterly dividend last year to 23 cents a share from 17.5 cents. Analysts have criticized that move in light of the company’s dwindling profits and said that the dividend was a chief source of personal income for members of the Sulzberger family, who control the company.

This is the financial equivalent of fiddling while Rome burns.

Advertising from banks and financial services companies actually increased as they sought to reassure jittery investors.

    Remain calm! All is well!!!

It cut operating costs 6.8 percent from the year-earlier quarter, to $677 million. But overall revenue fell faster, 8.9 percent, to $687 million.

I hate it when that happens. Well, maybe not in this case...

The Times Company reported operating profit of $10 million for the quarter, down 64.5 percent from $28.1 million in the quarter a year earlier.

Reminds me of a song by the best (former) singer in rock 'n roll...

  19. Oh, my freakin' god. Shank's opposite Bob Ryan on NESN's Globe 10.0.

I think a sheet of plywood would look more lifelike than Shankaughnessy. I'm sure it would add more to the Globe's bottom line, seeing as Home Depot's only a half mile up the road from 135 Morrissey Boulevard. Plus, you could pick up some red paint while you're there and do a reasonable facsimilie of the curly hair...

    ReplyDelete
  20. Actually, it's not a hundred covers and it took about three minutes of click, back,, click (they have this schoolboyish fantasy about women posing together, so it's not 'over a hundred covers').

I'm not inclined to rummage through the archives, especially since it would be a search for words rather than prominently displayed photographs, but you have stated in the past that I or Shaughnessy have a problem with people who aren't white.

Take 5 minutes to rummage through the Barstool archives. It's impossible to leave it without the impression that its proprietors subscribe to the theory that attractive women are Caucasian women (preferably drunk and posing in demeaning positions and circumstances).

    ReplyDelete
  21. Maybe Pinchy shouldn't have raised the dividend:

NEW YORK, Oct 23 (Reuters) - Standard & Poor's on Thursday slashed its ratings on the New York Times Co (NYT.N: Quote, Profile, Research, Stock Buzz) into junk territory and cited concerns about the newspaper publisher's revenue outlook, after it posted a third-quarter loss.

Moody's Investors Service also said it may follow the move, adding the publisher faces risks in refinancing its debt.

    Now that's demeaning...

    ReplyDelete
  22. OB,

It seems you are "back-peddling" with the racist argument.

If Barstool Sports has a sexist/racist view of the world. Shame on them.

If Shank attacks mostly african american and/or hispanics through his columns. Then readers have the right to figuratively "castrate" him for the targeted jabs. You may recall that other around the country define the Shank as Boston's Racial Profiler.

Stop fighting two fronts (attacking a reference to Barstools and defending Shank's racist crap).

Someone will lower the knockout punch to whomever back-peddles and loses "balance" when arguing.

You can search the site specifically. It would be pretty simple. Until you can show evidence, I don't think that you should make a claim about what I have said. I do know that I have said on occasion that others have made claims of racism in regards to Shaughnessy. Enough people believe that to make it relevant.

I'm still looking for the link between my noting where I got the link and my endorsement of Barstool's supposedly racist attitude.

  27. Those are papers who died, died:

NEW YORK (AP) - The Star-Ledger of Newark, N.J., will reduce its newsroom staff by nearly half through voluntary buyouts as New Jersey's largest newspaper seeks to return to profitability.

Jim Willse, the Star-Ledger's editor, said Friday that the newspaper accepted 151 buyout offers from its news staff, or about 45 percent of its 334 editorial employees. He said 17 buyout applications were rejected.

Some staffers already have left, and others are leaving by year's end, many after the elections.

"We've got from now to the end of the year to figure out what adjustments we have to make," Willse said. "We will be able to produce an abundance of good stories. We will still have a good paper but we have to figure out exactly how to accomplish that."

The number of buyouts accepted outside the newsroom was not immediately known. The newspaper had sought at least 200 total, out of 750 full-time, nonunion workers, and received more than enough applications.

  30. Boston Globe lost over 10% of its readers the past six months. The Atlanta Urinal & Constipation lost 13%. While OB may like to 'fudge numbers' to fit his narrative, he can't fudge lost eyeballs. People are giving up on the MSM and their agenda-driven mission.

    ReplyDelete
  31. OB:

    From (ironically enough) boston.com:

"Two of Massachusetts' biggest papers suffered steep declines, the audit bureau said yesterday. Daily paid circulation at The Boston Globe fell to 323,983, down 10.2 percent from last year, while Sunday dropped 8.2 percent, to 503,659. The Boston Herald's circulation slid 9.9 percent, to 167,506, while Sunday declined 7.4 percent, to 100,760."

Now, I don't have an MBA, so help me out here.
Is a 10% drop in paid circulation a good thing?
    (Notice the word "paid" please.)

    Take it away, bunky!

    Your pal,

    Timmy

    ReplyDelete
  32. While the tumbling financial numbers are good to see (because it means people at the Globe and NYT are getting whacked), the more meaningful number is circulation. This means fewer people are reading the content churned out by these propagandists. And this election cycle has firmly cemented both newspapers as propagandists, driving even more eyeballs away. The day after Obama wins there will be parties galore at the Globe and NYT...but the real fun for us happens in the months after, when the carnage continues in the form of worsening revenues and readership.

  33. Going, going, Gannett:

Dude, I was hoping and hoping and you did not disappoint!!!!

  37. Yes, fewer print copies screaming 'GLOBE POLL: OBAMA UP 13 POINTS!' and more Internet looks screaming 'GLOBE POLL: OBAMA UP 13 POINTS!'

    I see now.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Bruce, the Globe doesn't report facts. There is no "right wing," there is the truth on one side and there is leftism on the Globe side.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Yes, because when the word "Truth" gets tossed around, the word "Right wing" is ALWAYS followed by it in that sentence... fair and balanced?... yeah, sure.

Its all politics, people, neither side tells the truth. And that is the truth.

    By Dan Shaughnessy
    http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patriots/articles/2008/10/30/plenty_of_subtractions_but_belichick_a_big_plus/

Some snarky comments about "Boring Bill" but generally an acceptable column.
