Okay, it has been over two weeks since we've seen Dan grace the pages of the Boston Globe. What exactly is going on? Is Dan leaving? Is he miffed at the Globe's new hire? Is he on vacation? Or did the Globe just get smart and realize that the dude is long in the tooth and past his prime?
Post your theories here. Also anyone with inside info, we would love to hear what's going on.
he's sitting alone in a dark room obsessing about that "big lug" Curt Schilling
ReplyDeletehe's sitting alone in a dark room obsessing about that "big lug" Curt Schilling
ReplyDeletehe has been doing that for a long time
ReplyDeleteHe's going to Beijing to cover the closing ceremonies of the Olympics?
ReplyDeleteDan is out in LA searching for the "real" killers
ReplyDeleteHey it's Hollywood, maybe he's having some plastic surgery done, or maybe he's looking to update that Mike Brady haircut of his
ReplyDeleteDan and I have been on vacation with our families together at Salisbury Beach. Leisurely mornings watching Sportscenter, an afternoon at the beach, then we hit the t-shirt shops searching for bargains in the coed naked close-out bins and munch on some of that great fried dough (Dan likes his with confectioner's sugar, I prefer sprinkled cheese), then back to the cottage for a few meisterbraus. Tonight we're either going to hit the mini-golf again (he leads 7 games to 5) or head up to Hampton Beach for some skee-ball. Tomorrow we'll try the go-cart races.
ReplyDeleteBruce
ReplyDeleteThat was classic!
Dave
My guess is that he's enjoying a 'well deserved' vacation (quotation marks used for emphasis)
ReplyDeleteOB:
ReplyDeleteWas that a sense of humor I detected?
Ya big lug!
Your pal,
Timmy
yeah really, I've never known the "objective one" to have a sense of humor....that was actually pretty funny
ReplyDeleteNice post, OB!
ReplyDeleteI kinda miss the Hampton Beach skee-ball thingy. It was a lot of fun before & after digging up clams with the old man before Seabrook was fully installed. It dried up after that, and I'm aware that all good things must eventually come to an end.
A few years after that, I did a 100+ mile bike ride from Manchester, NH to Hampton to Rye and back to Manchester that I did with a bunch of high school friends when I was 15 or 16 along the old Route 101 (Charmingfare Links, etc.). Absolute fucking brutal ride. It took me a week to recover just from that expenditure. That, and we weren't real clued in on things like Powerbars, Gatorade and the like back in that day. On reflection, it explains a lot.
No fucking way in hell I could take the abuse 'offered' as a pro cyclist without doping. I managed back to back century (100 mile) rides in the mid-80's, but the attempt on the third day (both years) resulted in three mile rides before I surrendered faster than the French defending the Maginot Line.
I'm aware this can be attributed to a lack of training. Still, these are efforts incomprehensible to the uninitiated.
Since Shank hasn't posted recently, this offshoot of a subject is fair game in my book. Ron Borges is a freaking moron for suggesting that Lance Armstrong's not an athlete.
Where is Waldo...I mean, Where is Dan?
ReplyDelete1 - Who cares? Shouldn't we count our blessings that we haven't had to suffer through his columns?
2 - To rip off one of Dan's most tired lines... "Call him gone, call him on vacation, just call him a cab and get him out of here." Seriously, Dan has used that way too much.
I'm new to this site, and I was so happy to learn there are so many more people that -- like me -- dislike Dan's tired act.
Keep up the great work.
Hey Roger, what cut off the clams, changing water temps or changes in the currents?
ReplyDeleteDan and I got waylaid by the family! We were set for mini-golf but Dan's kids insisted on going to the penny arcade! Hot as hell! Stifling! Smelly people! Poor dental hygiene! We gave them a roll of quarters and hit a nearby bar, but to our dismay, no 21 year old coeds, just 38 year old single Moms sporting a 54-44-38 figure with 22 year old kids and 8 year old granddaughters hoping to start their second semester in the cosmetology course at community college in January after taking "some time off" so they can sub-rent a chair in the salon owned by their friend Chrystalle's third cousin's tattoo artist's common law aunt.
wow the kids were using the laptop to check whether anyone clicked on their myspace pages after using the Coppertone, and I was unnerved by the fight between the woman in the next cottage and her husband about the $23 "beach pizza" he bought for "suppah" (she thought, and rightly so, that provolone on pizza is a communist plot. His response: "You're frigid." Her answer: "The whole frigging beach can hear these springs squeak") so I hit enter before signing the above.
ReplyDeleteWhat cut off the clams, changing water temps or changes in the currents?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely the increase in water temperature; I also sorta remember the locals 'advising' us that it's probably not a great idea to dig clams near a nuke power plant. Can't argure with that...
He's been on long vacations before, such as when he went to Sicily a few years ago. He probably has built up lots of vacation time.
ReplyDeleteHas he been on TV?
He did a really insightful online video preview of the Red Sox-Yankees today, where he dropped insider knowledge such as "the Red Sox have to win the wild card or the division to make the playoffs," "the Red Sox could bury the Yankees with a sweep, or they could take two out of three, or one" and "Thursday will be the Red Sox last ever game at Yankee Stadium." Guess he's been preparing that two minute segment for two weeks, but at least it was worth it

ReplyDeleteTo which I'd like to respond to Shank, in my best William Shatner impression, "Thank you, Mr. Spock!"
OB - I was doing some digging around on your current change comment (my best guess - water temp & current changes from the plant would get destroyed by Mother Nature's influence based on volume and ferocity alone, although I'm a hypocrite for mentioning water temp's earlier (damn those facts!); I guess this should be another discussion) and found something interesting (in part):
ReplyDelete"Our studies document that at least some of the public health risks which closed portions of the harbor in the late 1980s have changed.
Then I found this link, which pretty much shoots down our fears back then because the plant wasn't actually online until 8/1990, says the alma mater's online library.
Did Dad and I fall for the hype? It appears we did. Then again, the clam digging thingy may have been outgrown by that point in my life. I guess this means that fears over nuclear energy increase when the power plant is in your playground...
More good news for The Globe's parent company:
ReplyDeleteNEW YORK (AP) -- New York Times Co. said Tuesday that its July revenue from continuing operations fell 10.1 percent this year as advertising revenue slipped 16.2 percent.
Overall revenue dropped to $235.9 million in July from $262.3 million in July 2007, the publisher said.
A continuing drop in classified ads and cutbacks in spending by movie studios, car companies and hotels were offset only partially by a rise in revenue from media, financial services, advocacy and health care ads for a net drop of 16.2 percent.
The company's flagship The New York Times paper had 15.3 percent lower ad revenue. At its New England media group, which includes The Boston Globe, July ad revenue dropped 24.5 percent.
That's gonna hurt like a bastard...
I saw Dan just last night, right here in St. Thomas, USVI. This is the off-season when hotel rates are cheaper. He was downing a few in Duffy's Love Shack, a popular bar which sits in the middle of a parking lot on the eastern end of the island. My guess is he had spent the day on St. John (he was sunburned as hell) and had just returned on the ferry ($10 round trip, a good deal). He was getting smashed, but I couldn't tell what he was drinking. I thought about going over to him to say "hi," or even get him to buy me a drink, but instead I said to myself, "nah." So I went over to Latitude 18 (a popular seaside bar) and quaffed a few Presidentes before calling it a night. Go Sox.
ReplyDeleteAs a previous poster commented, Shaughnessy makes a video appearance

His analysis is characteristically void of any depth. He sounds like a college intern practicing to become a sports reporter when he grows up. Why does the phrase "Boom goes the dynamite" come to mind?

Compare these two clips and you will see some startling similarities
Old Shank was on the Sox pre-game show last night on NESN. Is he officially retiring from his column (he packed it in years ago)
ReplyDeleteHe had a column today. Did anyone catch the postmark from where he mailed it in?
ReplyDeleteYup, Nixon reference, Seinfeld reference ... at least he had a current reference for one in Clark Rockefeller. He also made reference to Schilling's achievement in 2004 w/o referring to him as Schill, bashing his blog, or calling him a blow hard ... is Shank feeling well?
ReplyDeleteCHB mentions the nut job who jumped onto the screen behind home plate years ago "and Sox players worried about the safety of their wives who were seated below." What was going to happen, loose change would fall from the idiot's pocket?
ReplyDeleteIf anyone wants to see what other people thought happened to CHB, check out the bostonsportsmediawatch.net discussion board. Specifically, page 6 of yesterday's thread.
ReplyDeleteHey DB
ReplyDeleteWhat day exactly on BSMW? The daily thread on the 26th? I am not seeing anything but I will look again
Thanks
Dave
Never mound, I found the great pick of Shank on page 6
